Golden Skills
Golden Skills is a personal photographic exploration of migration and cultural exchangethrough the metaphor of turmeric - the miracle spice.
The starting point for this project was Anna’s personal journey with migration, and the unique significance that turmeric had in her own experience. Anna’s connection with turmeric began when she met her husband and was introduced to Indian cuisine, where turmeric is used as a key ingredient. At a time when many doubted the union a white European woman with an Indian man, Anna defied conventional expectations. Overcoming the stereotypical views held by some of her family regarding Eastern traditions, she embraced Indian culture wholeheartedly. Later, she introduced turmeric to her homeland of Poland, incorporating it into traditional Polish dishes and sharing its numerous properties. A memorable family story recounts how her uncle used turmeric to heal a wounded hen, a moment that contributed to the spice's local reputation as a miracle remedy. Tumeric, the ‘miracle spice’ became to source of understanding and acceptance for Anna and her family.
Golden Skills looks into not only Anna’s encounter with turmeric but also into it’s rich historical and cultural legacy. A spice celebrated for its vibrant colour, distinct flavour, and myriad health benefits. Turmeric’s history is deeply intertwined with the spice trade, during which European colonizers exploited enslaved labour to cultivate and harvest this golden ingredient. Its use in cooking, religious rituals, traditional medicine, and visual art has cemented its status as a symbol of both beauty and complexity.
Turmeric is employed, in this project, as a powerful metaphor for the often-overlooked skills and unique qualities of migrants and refugees. Just as turmeric adds a myriad of benefits to every culture it touches, the talent and resilience of migrants and refugees have the potential to enrich communities if their abilities are recognized and valued. Golden Skills aims to capture both the physical allure of turmeric and its deeper symbolic narrative, portraying hidden potential waiting to transform societies. Through carefully composed images, the project visualizes various objects as representations of the valuable skills refugees can contribute to the economy and society at large.
Ultimately, Golden Skills invites viewers to reconsider historical narratives and appreciate the transformative power of acknowledging the unique skills, traditions, experiences and talents that migrants and refugees bring to our lives. The project challenges audiences to look beyond the surface and envision how inclusive recognition can foster thriving, vibrant communities.
